The chemical composition of S32750 and S32760 are similar; however, the latter contains slightly more copper and tungsten. The copper content (min. 0.5, max 1.0) permits excellent resistance to corrosion in many nonoxidizing and mineral acids like hydrochloric and sulfuric acid.
Super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) is a candidate material for production tubing in oil and gas wells and subsea pipelines used to transport corrosive hydrocarbon fluids. The suitability of this material for high temperature applications is examined in this paper.

High temperature strength is similar to SUS 430 in the range of 950~1150℃. However the steel shows rapid increase in the strength below 900℃. Regarding cold workability, care is required as proof stress is high and elongation is low in comparison with SUS 304
Various welding methods are applicable in the same manner as with the standard austenitic stainless steels, including shielded metal arc welding, TIG welding, and plasma welding. Same duplex grade type welding consumable should be used.
A mixture of nitric acid and fluoric acid is used in pickling. However, because descaling is somewhat difficult in comparison with SS304, alkali immersion before acid pickling, and if possible, shot blasting are extremely effective.
Ferralium 255 – 1.4507,UNS S32550, F61, Super Duplex 255
Ferralium® 255 – super duplex 4507 is a super duplex stainless steel supplied in the hot worked and annealed condition. It achieves higher strengths than most stainless steels and alternative corrosion resistant alloys, offering the potential to reduce section size and therefore weight and cost.
As a 25% Cr alloy, with significant additions of copper, Ferralium® 255 offers excellent corrosion resistance in a wide variety of corrosive chemicals including sulphuric, nitric and phosphoric acid. In seawater and other chloride containing environments it also provides outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, with Critical Pitting Temperature exceeding 50°C. Excellent ductility and impact strength at both ambient and sub-zero temperatures combine with a high resistance to abrasion, erosion and cavitation erosion.
Listed in NACE MR 01 75 for sour service and having gained ASME Approval for Pressure Vessel applications, Ferralium® 255-SD50 is tested to the highest degree using tests designed to guarantee that the trade-marked product possesses high integrity, a correct phase balance and the absence of sigma and other deleterious phases.

FERRALIUM 255 is a cost effective alternative to materials such as the nickel alloys, 20 type alloys, brass and bronze. Marine environments have long been the domain of admiralty bronze. Alloy 255 is replacing admiralty bronze, and the nickel alloys, in offshore platforms, deck hardware, rudders and shafting.
Alloy 255 is also making inroads in “borderline” corrosion applications where the nickel alloys and high performance alloys have been used but may not have been absolutely necessary. In some instances, it has even been used to replace high performance Ni-Cr-Mo-F-Cu alloys in the phosphoric acid industry.
Valves, pumps, shafts, marine environments, Applications in down-hole, waste water, polycarbonate production, and demineralized water production.

Duplex stainless steels are based around a composition of 22% chromium, whereas super duplex stainless steels are based around a composition of 25% chromium. By increasing the chromium content, the level of pitting corrosion resistance is also increased.

Stainless steel grade 254 SMO™, UNS S31254, 1.4547, 6MO, F44
Stainless steel 254SMO ( UNS S31254 ) is a very high end austenitic stainless steel. It is designed with a combination of impact toughness resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, and pitting and crevice corrosion with strength that is twice that of the stainless steel 300 series.
For certain applications, stainless steel 254SMO ( 1.4547 ) has been reported to be a cost-effective substitute for high nickel and titanium alloys. It is known to possess excellent workability as well.

254 SMO stainless steel is quite tough to machine due to the extremely high work hardening rate and lack of sulfur content; however using sharp tools, overpowered machine tools, positive feeds, good amount of lubrication, and slow speeds tend to provide good machining results.
Welding of stainless steel type 254 SMO requires filler material without which it results in poor strength properties. Filler metals such as AWS A5.14 ERNiCrMo-3, and alloy 625 are recommended. Electrodes used in the process, have to match with AWS A5.11 ENiCrMo-12.
Annealing of this material should be performed at 1149-1204°C (2100-2200°F), which should be followed by a water quench.
Forging, upsetting and other operations relating to this material can be performed at 982 – 1149°C (1800 – 2100°F). It is recommended that temperatures do not exceed this range as it would result in scaling and reduction in the workability of the material. To re-attain maximum corrosion resistant properties, it is advisable to perform post-process annealing.
Cold working can be carried out using all the traditional methods; however the process would be tough due to its high work hardening rate. The result will provide the material with increased strength and toughness.
Stainless steel grade 254 SMO™ does not respond to heat treatment. Hardening is possible only through cold reduction.
Stainless steel grade 254 SMO™ is used in the following areas:
